Technical Standards Manual Updates

The first pages of the Technical Standards Manual

NYC Open Data’s Technical Standards Manual (TSM) sets standards, processes, and guidelines that City agencies use when making their data publicly available. To increase its readability and make its guidance more actionable, the TSM received a major update in 2022, where its content was rewritten and reorganized to mirror the cyclical publishing process of identifying, preparing, prioritizing, publishing, and, finally, maintaining open data.

For this next set of updates, we will continue to make the TSM easier to read with formatting enhancements and edits for plain language, expanded guidance to help ODCs in their roles, and updated policies and references. We invite all users of Open Data, civic technologists, and data enthusiasts to review an outline of this year’s planned updates and offer their thoughts on opportunities for further improvement.

Feel free to review and provide feedback to the Open Data Team using our help desk at nyc.gov/askopendata and selecting the "ask a general question about NYC Open Data" option. While these planned updates will be rolling out as they are ready, the TSM is a living document and feedback is always welcome. The latest version of the Technical Standards Manual is permanently available at on.nyc.gov/TSM.
